Internet of Things Scanner
This IoT Scanner shows if Your Device is Vulnerable to be used in Denial-of-Service attack (DoS attack).
A DoS attack is a one type of cyber attack and it is analogous to a group of people crowding the entry door or gate to a shop or business, and not letting legitimate parties enter into the shop or business, disrupting normal operations.
Criminal perpetrators of DoS attacks often target sites or services hosted on high-profile web servers such as banks or credit card payment gateways. Revenge, blackmail and activism can motivate these attacks.
The Internet of Things is a network of physical objects such as household devices, smart TVs and security cameras that are connected to the internet.
The UK-based consumer security company BullGuard has developed an Internet of Things Scanner that lets you check if your device is available for public access — As of now, nearly 200 million devices could be vulnerable.
According to BullGuard there could be more than 185 million Internet-connected devices that are unprotected and vulnerable to hacking attacks.
Check if your internet-connected devices at home are public on Shodan. If they are, this means they are accessible to the public, and hackers.
What is Shodan?
Shodan is a search engine for the Internet of Things. Shodan allows users to find devices that are publicly accessible on the internet, and which may be vulnerable to hackers.
Shodan is a search engine that lets the user find specific types of computers (web cams, routers, servers, etc.) connected to the internet using a variety of filters.
Some have also described it as a search engine of service banners, which are meta-data the server sends back to the client.
This can be information about the server software, what options the service supports, a welcome message or anything else that the client can find out before interacting with the server.
When I check my system this IoT Scanner gives following result
Your network is reachable through port 10243.
This is typically a web port, which is used when hosting a website or serving web pages from your network. This is unusual for home networks; typically home users should not have any ports accessible from the internet. Your network and devices are vulnerable, and can potentially be accessed and controlled by hackers.
If you deliberately opened this port to enable specific device functionality, then you’re probably OK.
If this is the case, you should make sure any web interface access that allows you configure or access functionalities of your home devices is password protected and the default password is not used.
If not, you should check which device is using this port and whether it affects the device’s functionality. You will need to modify your router’s configuration in order to restrict usage of this port.
Use IoT Scanner to check your system vulnerability and fix the issues you get in result to avoid DoS attacks.
