Smart Healthcare for smart India
India is moving towards being a Smart country with smart cities. Smart healthcare is among the big cornerstones on which a smart country is based. In India, quality healthcare is hard to access in smaller cities, towns, and villages, where the majority of the population resides. Smart healthcare in India would make good quality healthcare available to all its citizens. smart healthcare will also improve the healthcare experience for both the patients and the doctors.
There are several proposals which will bring smart healthcare to the forefront in India.
- There is a definite lack of specialists in smaller cities. To overcome this, the local healthcare centers can have appropriate equipment and trained technicians, who can perform the required tests or procedures for the patients. The images or reports from the test or procedure can be remotely sent to specialists. The specialist can then work with the local healthcare provider to provide proper diagnosis and treatment for the patient. This is a huge time-saver for the patient as well as the doctors.
- Wearable IoT devices can be used for remotely monitoring the patient’s blood pressure, blood sugar, oxygen levels etc.
The doctors and patients will be updated of the current health status at all times without requiring interaction. This is particularly useful for elderly patients who need frequent monitoring but have difficulty traveling to the hospital frequently.

3. IoT devices can also be integrated into hospital beds to monitor and communicate patient status. Cisco has introduced Cisco Patient Connect which provides personalized information to the hospitalized patients. Using the screen in their room, patients can see their current status, prescription information, daily schedule, food options as well as detailed process information like discharge procedures. Patients can also communicate to their doctors, nurses and even family members using remote video calling. Patients also receive personalized informational and relaxation videos on their screens. This makes the patient’s hospital stay as comfortable as possible.

4. Storing patient data electronically is a big game changer in healthcare. In times of emergency or when the patient is unable to respond, having easy access to patient data across hospitals will save critical time so that the treatment can be started as soon as possible. With existing health problems and test reports easily available, doctors will not have to waste time in performing those tests again. The government will need to pass regulations for standardized and secure storage of patient data and these regulations need to be adopted by hospitals.
5. Smart home diagnosis is very useful for diagnosis of minor ailments without leaving the comfort of the patient’s home. A smart camera can scan the patient’s face for an initial diagnosis and whether physical consultation with a doctor is required.
Cisco Extended Care allows patients to have video consultations with their doctor. It also allows private and secure messaging between the doctor and the patient.
India has started taking steps towards smart healthcare. There is still a long road ahead for India to become healthcare-smart. Smart healthcare is a huge area to explore for innovations and IoT applications. This is the path to provide better health to all the people of India.
