IoT Based Smart Parking System using RFID and ESP8266
With the rapid growth in the number of vehicles and the world’s population day by day, simple tasks like parking has become laborious. In the coming years, it is expected to get only worse, leading to conflicts like lack of parking space and traffic problems.
With the advancement of technology, IoT is playing a critical part in our day-to-day lives. IoT has made the idea of smart cities possible. It also plays a crucial role in smart parking systems. Here, we propose an idea on smart parking system using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.
This system aims at replacing the traditional parking system with high technological, IoT based smart parking using RFID.
In this approach, to access the parking space, the users are designated with a smart card.
An android application has to be installed in order to check the availability of parking slots.
This saves the time of the user which would previously be wasted in searching for an available parking slot. This helps in easier check-in and check-out in the parking spaces.
A certain minimum amount in the smart card has to be maintained in order to get access into the parking area.
The user does not have to stop before checking in or checking out of the parking space for paying the money. Hence, this saves our time.
This whole system is controlled by the circuitry of the microcontroller. To check the availability of parking slots online in the mobile application, various sensors that are fitted in the parking slots sense where the slots is empty or full, and then this information is transferred in the application over IoT. To carry out this function, IoT gecko server is used.
RFID is an automized vehicle identification system which can be used to identify vehicles and collect the parking fee without stopping the vehicle.
In this project, we have used RFID scanners to control the check in and check out of the vehicles. The RFID scanner scans the smart card and transmits this data over to the microcontroller.
This data is then transferred over the IoT server, where the card is checked for minimum balance. If the card contains adequate balance, entry is permitted into the parking slot, else entry is denied.
Once the car is parked, the sensors fitted in that parking slot will indicate the slot number of that car.
During check out, the parking fee will be automatically deducted from the smart card provided. Hence, the user does not have to stop to pay the parking fee while exiting the parking space.
Therefore, this approach can save a lot of fuel and our precious time.
